Day 3 : De Janeiro a NYC girl’s best friend

About 5 years ago while having a drink with a friend in New York City she asked if we could jump into De Janeiro on the way back to the Subway.  I was extremely confused De Janeiro .. in my mind was a place far far away from New York City … certainly not somewhere we could magically time travel to at that very moment.  She went on to explain that De Janeiro was a girl’s best friend in NYC and thought I was crazy that I hadn’t heard of it before. It turns out it was a home for lost clothes being given a second chance at being loved.  These clothes are samples and over stock and a treasure trove for those who dare to enter and sort through its cluttered floor space.

One hurried visit, and we had to hurry as it was closing for the night and I was hooked.  After discovering it was only one block up from my office right next to Grand Central Station it regularly became added to my lunch time perusal or last minute resort when I needed something to wear.  When new girls would join the office I would quickly educate them on this wonderful place.  I would even have weekly catch up sessions with our cleaner on what new stock had come in (I don’t think I knew any girl that didn’t stop in every few weeks to see what they could find).
Each time you went it was certainly hit or miss and you would sometimes need to circle a few times before finding a hidden gem in between the racks, but when you did find that little cute dress or bargain the hour that seemed to fade away in a minute that meant I had to eat lunch at my desk would be totally worth it.

The dress I’m wearing today is from this store .. as will many more from the dresses that are to come.  But it did make me a little sad.  Memories of dodging the sidewalk traffic of Grand Central, hurrying past the Starbucks and people with suitcases hailing taxi’s holding onto the tiny hope that something exciting would be found at De Janeiro is a feeling I haven’t had in a while and something I do look back on and miss…. More so for the bargains I’m sure to be missing out on!
